Ways That You Can Make Money Working For Yourself As A Registered Nurse | Not A Travel Nurse

Nurses have so much value to offer within the world of healthcare. Even within the massive dysfunction that is the current system. Actually, especially, within the massive dysfunction that is the current system.

Working for yourself as a nurse is a great way to earn extra money or eventually replace your full-time nursing salary. Your compassion as a nurse can take you incredibly far as a business owner.

There is no such thing as an overnight success when it comes to making money for yourself as a registered nurse. Earning your first dollar in business can seem very overwhelming.

When you become your own boss, it may take you a while before you begin to generate consistent income, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start.

The decision to own your own business is not for everyone. Working for yourself is seriously hard work. But regardless of where you want to end up, your mindset will get you there.

Ways Nurses Can Provide Value

There are many businesses you can start as a registered nurse. Regardless of your specialty, experience, education, or interests. As a registered nurse, there are infinite ways that you can earn money for yourself.

Types Of Businesses

The three broad categories of businesses are service, product, and hybrid-based business models.

A service-based business is just that, a business that offers a service in exchange for a set dollar amount.

For example, lets say you have 10 years of hospice experience and you decide to provide one-on-one coaching sessions with clients to help them cope with the death of a loved one.

That is a service-based business model. You are providing a one-on-one coaching service in exchange for money.

A product-based business develops, creates, and distributes a product in exchange for a set dollar amount.

For example, lets say you have 5 years of L&D experience and you want to help new grad L&D nurses feel more confident when they are just starting out. You could create products that were helpful for you when you were starting out. These could be digital or physical products.

The third business model is based on a combination of the two. Your business can be whatever you want it to be. Here are a few that you can apply to any niche with a relatively low investment of capital.

Businesses Nurses Can Start Today

There are limitless ways that nurses can provide value to the human race. Making money for yourself doesn’t happen overnight, though. Typically the least time-consuming and quickest return on investment are service-based businesses. They allow you to take the knowledge you already have and create value that you can exchange for money.

It’s just like nursing. You probably didn’t have a job lined up the second you decided that you wanted to become a nurse. You had to take pre-requisites, get into nursing school, pass, take boards, and then you were taken seriously as someone applying for your first RN position.

The same is true when working for yourself as a nurse. You have to prove yourself and show that you are capable of the job your client is looking for. Here are a few service-based businesses you can start as a registered nurse.

Consulting

This is a very broad category of business. What you could consult on would greatly depend on your experience and interests, but think outside of the box here. And be specific.

Think back to the hospice example, one stream of income could come from one-on-one coaching, but another could come from start-up health companies who want to break into the hospice space.

Maybe you feel passionate about one area of your industry that could use a refresh. You can use your experience and expertise to help drive the change that you want to see in your industry.

This thought process can be applied to ANY nursing experience or skill level. And you are the one in control when you work for yourself, so you can decide what avenue you go down based off of your own preferences and situations.

Legal nurse consulting is another area of consulting where nurses can work for themselves and use their assessment and critical thinking skills in the legal setting. There are so many avenues that you can go down in the legal nurse consulting avenue as well.

Coaching

Just like consulting, there is a wide range of opportunities when it comes to making money as a coach. What direction and the people that you decide to help with your coaching is up to you.

For example, you could decide to coach new grad nurses through the transition of going from nursing school to their first six months on the job. Or you could decide to take your many years of informatics nursing experience and coach other nurses who want to make the transition like you did many years ago.

The opportunities to make money with your knowledge and insight are endless. Leave a comment if this got your wheels turning; I’d love to hear what you plan on doing to make money with your nursing experience.
